Nobody loves seeing their food go to waste because of poor storage. This is one of the main reasons why most homesteads have fridges. But even with a fridge, without proper storage, food will still go bad. If your food goes bad within your fridge, before looking for a technician to “repair” the fridge, look at how you have been storing them.
This short piece is for those with a fridge. For those without a fridge, all is not lost. It is advisable that if you do not have a fridge, you store your food in cool, dry places under manageable temperatures. Traditionally, our forefathers would cook food, dry it on the sun for hours before storing it. But times have changed and we have to move with the changing times.
For those with a fridge, how do you store your food in the fridge? What order have you been following? Have you been doing it the right way?
For the ready-to-eat foods like dairy products, ready meals and packaged foods, leftovers, cooked meats, and prepared salads, covered or seal them in containers to prevent contamination and store them at the top of the fridge, away from raw foods so that harmful bacteria cannot transfer from the raw food to the cooked food.
For the raw meat, poultry and fish, put them in sealed containers or plastic bags to stop them touching or dripping onto other foods then store them at the bottom of your fridge to prevent cross-contamination. Ensure that each item is wrapped or in a sealed container so that it doesn’t come into contact with other foods for maintenance of freshness.
For fruit, vegetables, and salad vegetables, wash them prior to storage. Make sure that your fruit, vegetables, and salad are wrapped in paper or plastic with air holes to keep them protected from any contamination. For salads and herbs, try wrapping them in a damp paper towel before storing to prevent them from drying out and to keep them fresher for longer. Have you gotten something new?
