Here are what Kenyans searched for in March

Google search trends in Kenya show that the Forest road video, Winter paralympics, KCPE results 2022, International Women’s Day, and Vladimir Putin Russia Ukraine war topped March searches.

The Forest road video created a national uproar, after a video that captured boda boda riders brutally assaulting a lady diplomat involved in a road scuffle with a boda boda operator surfaced online on March 7th. Kenyans took to the online platforms to recount nasty experiences at the hands of rogue boda boda riders. President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a national crackdown requiring boda boda riders to be subjected to fresh registration. The incident that was first on the most searched items happened on the eve of the International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD is commemorated on March 8th to recognise social, political and economic achievements of women. Women feminists in the country came out in large numbers to express their disappointment of the incident a day to celebrating women in the society.

Winter paralympics and the Vladimir Putin Russia Ukraine war were second and fifth in the trends. The paralympics took place in Beijing, China. As the opening ceremony proceeded, there were doubts Ukraine’s team of 20 athletes would make it to China and the prospect of them sharing a podium with Russian athletes even as Vladimir Putin ordered Russian tanks to continue their assault towards Kyiv. The closing ceremony of the paralympics was centred around a message of peace and unity. Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, stated that through unity there is hope. Hope for inclusion, hope for harmony and importantly hope for peace.

KCPE 2022 results emerged third on the trends. On Monday 28th, the Education Cabinet Secretary announced the results for the recently concluded 2021 KCPE exams, where the top student garnered 428 marks. This is the second-last cohort in the 8-4-4 curriculum as the education system in Kenya fully transitions into the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). The school calendar in Kenya was one of the key areas that was severely altered due to COVID-19, however, the Ministry of Education has set a plan to resume to the normal academic calendar by 2023.

Sixth and seventh respectively on the list were Women’s Cricket World Cup and World Cup qualifiers. The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup is the sport’s oldest world championship, with the first tournament held in England in 1973. Five years ago, Australia were dumped out at this stage by India, but have dominated the women’s game ever since. Currently, Australia has bagged into the final of the Women’s World Cup with a 157-run dismantling of West Indies in Wellington. The 2022 men’s World Cup will take place in Qatar and will feature 32 teams before the field expands to 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup.

Sultana, the latest series on Kenya’s Citizen TV comes in eighth on the list as it replaces Zora. The new series features Lolani Kalu who retired as a news reporter on NTV television playing as ‘Babu”. The show airs daily from Monday to Friday between 7.30 to 8.00 pm.

Closing the list was Coleus tricolour and Jah Cure respectively. The Coleus plant, also known as Painted Nettle, is often grown outdoors but can survive indoors if there is sufficient bright light. It has distinctive leaf shapes, intricate patterns, and rich colours making it one of the rare plants that are grown almost exclusively for colourful foliage. On March 29th, the well-renowned reggae singer, Jah Cure, was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter charges.
